"Worry does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow, it empties today of its strength." –——Corrie ten Boom
Matthew 6:25-34 (ESV)
Do Not Be Anxious
25 “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?
Do not be fearful of where your next meal will come from or what clothing you will wear tomorrow. It is good to be prepared, plan accordingly if needed, but do not let anxiety about these things rule over your mind. Life is more than just eating and drinking and what we will wear. No need to over-complicate these simple things of life. Know that God will provide. He will certainly provide. God is a Good Father with good intentions. It is our job to have faith, believe in Jesus, and trust our Heavenly Father that He will show up in your life and give you the things that you need. It is our job to seek Him through His Word in the Bible and through prayer.
Do not lose sight of God. Only people that don’t believe and that don’t have faith and that don’t trust in the Lord will be shaken by the things they cannot have control over. Tomorrow is a new day that God keeps for tomorrow. Be still and know that God is who He says He is. There’s no need to waste time feeling apprehensive, for God has everything under control. Today you will have what you need because God is your provider, and come tomorrow, it will be revealed in time what you will eat, drink, and wear. Place your fears in God’s hands and He will work it out for good.
26 Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?
In this verse, we see that God loves His creation. Even the birds, that don’t know where their next meal with come from, do not live in fear. They chirp and sing all day long, flying freely across the cities. They trust that they will find food and water and they sure do. They even bathe wherever they can. They do not work as we do, but they do gather and work in their own ways. Some birds even sew leaves together to create a home for their hatchlings.
They don’t know how they will make their nests or how far they have to glide to find the fitting branches and other materials in order to make themselves feel at home, yet God still provides for these little creatures. The fowl of the air are well taken care of by the Lord, but you are of greater importance to the Lord, because He made you in His image. He will most definitely provide all your needs because He loves you. He will give you to eat as He gives the birds to eat.
27 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?
Anxiety crushes the heart. It can take a toll if you keep worrying without ceasing. Your mind should not be consumed like that. God wants to free you from this disorder. You cannot add a single minute nor hour nor day by worrying about everything. You actually lose time trying this method. Instead of feeling this way, why don’t you try staying still and taking deep breaths so you can control your mind. Do not let your mind and thought overtake you and your day.
Take back control by allowing Jesus into your heart and He will help you fight this anxiety battle that is warring in your head. He is just to be there for You and help you. Remember that you need peace of mind and the Devil is trying to take that from you so you can lose time from what you’re really meant to be doing. You are allowed to focus on God and His good promises over your life. Next time you feel anxiety creeping in, pray, pray, pray and the Devil will have to flee from you.
28 And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin,
Clean clothes are needed. We always need a new outfit every day to go to work, to school, to church, to the stores, everywhere. God knows how important clothing is. That is why He makes sure to always provide you with these good gifts. He gives unto you garments to wear for every season, no matter what. Whether you work or not, your Heavenly Father always provides for you. Do not forget that He loves you so much; He will clothe you. It is time to worry less and pray more.
Rely on God to keep you warm just like He always has. The lilies and flowers of the field don’t work, but still grow beautifully as ever because they rely on their caretakers to give them water, and more importantly, they rely on God to provide sunlight and soil for their growth and their splendor. Their colors are a blast to admire, their smell gives you fresh life, and they are clothed in such beauty and essence that God provides for them.
29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
The endless array of fields and flowers that grow tremendously beautiful is enough to lift your spirits when you feel sad or in this case, anxious. Flowers can help ease whatever you’re going through. By seeing them, you’re reminded that God created these. They grow strong stems. They grow from seedlings and out they start moving up the soil to make their way out into the Earth, where they will grow green leaves and then bloom its flower. When the flower petals opens, it causes a beautiful sight. Colors help ease your mind and its unique flower smell helps to relax your thoughts and de-clutter your mind. Each little flower looks so different but God allows them to be here on Earth. They have a purpose–to help you through tough times and lift your mood. They are taken care of by God above.
If He loves them enough to have them sprout and grow wonderfully, how much more does He want you to grow? He wants you to be rising up out of the ground and into the Earth with beauty and splendor, with green leaves and colorful petals with a wonderful scent. We can learn so much from this short verse. It is said here that even King Solomon was never dressed as beautiful as the lilies of the field–and Solomon was dresses adorned to be fit as king, yet in all of His glory, our Heavenly Father makes sure that the flowers are kept well and grow in such colors and smells that please the senses. They are clothed by God.
30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
You must have faith in God. He makes the grass of the field grow green and clothe the Earth. It is alive for a short time and then it is cut down and thrown away so there won’t be tall grass, which we don’t desire. So if God can still make the grass grow even though it’ll be gone tomorrow, trust God to give you what you need. You need shoes and clothes, trust God. You need water and food, trust God. You need shelter and money, trust that God will provide.
He provides for even the simplest of things, how much more will He give you when He knows you need. People of little faith need to start paying more attention to the gifts God has given them. They must regard God as their provider. He provides all things. Do not be a person without faith, one who worries about what job they will get, what relationship will work out, where they’re going to live, where they’re going to sleep. No, God has it covered. You just need to calm down, settle into God’s promises and all will be okay with Him by Your side. You are never alone, He is with you providing all your needs even when you don’t know it.
31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’
Don’t start your day by worrying about what to eat. Just turn to the Lord, where the source of food is; He will supply and give you more than you need. Don’t be anxious about these things. Don’t ask God in anxiety. Reach for Him knowing that you humbly place your trust in Him as your sole provider. You then will not ask what you will eat and what you will be wearing. These are things that shouldn’t give you any form of anxiety because they are issues that God has already taken care of. Thank the Lord that all is covered; He knows your individual needs.
Take importance that God knows the things that you are in need of. If you don’t have food or don’t have something to drink, go into prayer and seek the Lord. He will give you all your basic needs: food, water, clothing, and so much more that you didn’t even ask for. He loves you so much that He will give you beyond what you seek from Him. He will shower you with gifts beyond your imagination, all you need to do is to have faith and let all that fear and anxiety slip away. Free your mind from worry and fill it with God.
32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.
God has an understanding of what it is that you need. He created you. He knows that you will get hungry and thirsty. He knows you need shelter and clothing. He knows you need work and money. He knows that you need education and books. He knows that you need all of these things and more. He knows that you need them all and if you start to place more attention to God and His word, then the anxious part of your brain will stop being so fearful of the unknown. We as humans sometimes feel anxious about everything, but understand these verses.
God is speaking to your heart and to your mind, let your soul rest in Him, for He alone is God. He made you and He will take care of all your needs. He even takes care of all the unbelievers of this world, how much more will He take care of you, son and daughter of the Most High King. Learn to give it to God and He will sort it all out for you. You will have food. You will have water to drink. You will have clothing on your back. You will have much more than you expected because you belong to The King of Heaven. All things are His.
33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
This is all we need to do. God doesn’t tell us to do anything else except to seek His kingdom first and all the righteous things in which to do, and He will provide the rest. If you seek Him every day, it is His promise that you will never be in lack. He loves us tremendously that we cannot begin to understand what Heavenly love is. His love is not like our love. His love is given and not earned. He has loved us before we were even alive. He is Holy and All-Righteous! He is Great and He is Mighty! He conquers all and makes way for you to go through! You are His prized joy. He will definitely provide for you with abundance, not scarcity.
If you lack these things, it is because you have a deficiency of faith. You lack because of your lack of belief in God. It is true that if your basic needs aren’t being met, that you are lacking prayer time. Lack comes from your lack of being obedient to the Lord. So if you are tired of feeling this way, turn to God. Do not be anxious any longer. Do not try to live life on your own strength without having God 1st place in all that you do. If you place anything above Him, it is a fact that you do not fully believe in God to provide for your needs. You will lack because you are disregarding His teachings. You will continue to lack if you do not seek Him in prayer. So today, hunger and thirst for God. Open the Bible and read it; listen to a Christian song and sing along with the lyrics. This is the true drink and the true bread. They act as food and water for the spirit and soul. If you don’t want to lack peace of mind, if you are tired of lacking your basic needs, and if you want to grow in faith, turn to Christ and all else will be given unto you, says the Lord, Your God.
34 “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
There are enough problems for one day. Leave tomorrow for tomorrow. Do not be anxious for the day to come. Live in peace and harmony that today God has it under control and He is taking care of you and meeting all of your needs. Your trust in Him will ensure that you have God in the center of your life. Do all things for good and don’t let the fear of tomorrow set it. Today is today and there are so many things that are to be done on this day. Let tomorrow rest in God’s hands because no matter how much you are worried, you cannot do anything about it. The Lord is in total control.
The day is controlled by God and God alone, the Maker of the Universe. He is the One that tells the Earth to rotate and to turn into a new sunny day. He is the One who commands the stars to sparkle at night, and the moon to shine. God is the One who brings a new dawn and brings the birds to chirp in the morning. God alone is God. You cannot have any control over all these things, so then, there is no need to worry. Live out your day without fear, without anxiety, without trembling in fright of things that you aren’t in control of. Turn to the Lord for all His plans are perfect, and He will give you serenity.
So Today Refuse to Worry!
***Questions you may have….
Does Jesus command us not to worry?
This is not so much a command as it is an invitation to rest in his beloved arms. We will, at times, fret when we should trust God. But only when we get closer to Him, will our fears and anxiety about the things we cannot control will dissipate in perfect love and in perfect trust. His invitation is open to all and is a liberating principal, not another law to obey.
Is it wrong to worry?
Jesus was emphasizing that we no longer have to worry. This is an invitation to rest in the arms of a loving Father. As humans, we sometimes cross the line and violate this principle when we allow ourselves to constantly focus on ourselves instead of God.
Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?
Just as worship gives God the opportunity to move on your behalf, worrying gives the Devil the opportunity to move against you. Worry means to play the enemy’s lies in your mind over and over again. Worry means we try to control things that are really up to God to control. God promises in Isaiah 26:3 that He will keep us in perfect peace when we keep our minds fixed on Him. So when the urge to worry comes, use it as a reminder to turn your focus on the blessings that you have in your life. Take a moment and worship the Lord and thank Him for His good and precious promises! Cast all of your cares on Him, because He cares for you!
Prayer for anxiety:
In Jesus’ name, I pray that you no longer are controlled by fear. I pray you no longer are consumed with circumstances that are out of your hands, but place your hope in Jesus Christ alone. He is your anchor, the One to go to at all times. He says in His word to cast your cares on Him. He will receive you and all your troubles with arms open wide. I pray you seek God and His word for assurance and no longer feel desperate without resolve. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
God, place in my brother and sister a wholesome feeling in their souls, one that can help them relax and trust in you with complete confidence so that when anxiety arises they may stay focused on You, Lord instead of wasting time on the stressors of life. Fill their emptiness and confusion with Your perfect Word. Let them not forget who is in control. For fear and worrisome do not come from you Father, so don’t let it overtake them. Instead, protect them from the Enemy that feeds them all these voices of lies and protect their ears from His attacks at all times. Let them remain in close connection to the Holy Spirit and through prayer and supplication, may they fear You God and only You, for You alone hold our souls within Your palms so why should we be worried. Place in my brother and sister a renewed heart of love, peace, patience, assurance, and let them breath with ease from having to be worried about their finances, about their relationships, about the news, and about anything else that is hindering them from being free to think clearly. This way, they are guided in the right direction to trust in You alone God, then they can approach these aspects of life without the anxiety attacks that plague them. I ask this all in the mighty name of Your Son, Jesus Christ of Nazareth. Amen.
God bless you my dear friend!
In true commitment to the Lord,
