What Christians Should Know About Halloween

“God is pure light, undimmed by darkness of any kind.”

1 John 1:5 (VOICE)

Since we have entered the month of October, it is only fitting that we begin talking about Halloween. We’ll be going over Scripture verses that tell us about the nature of this day. We will also learn if Christians should or shouldn’t celebrate this holiday, therefore, make sure to squeeze some time to read this one! It might just change your perspective on this day entirely. To start, we’ll look at these two verses.

We find in James 4:7 (Good News Translation: GNT) that it says, ‘So then, submit yourselves to God. Resist the Devil, and he will run away from you.‘

Also, in Ephesians 5:15-16 (International Children’s Bible: ICB) it reads, ‘So be very careful how you live. Do not live like those who are not wise. Live wisely. I mean that you should use every chance you have for doing good, because these are evil times.

We all know this time of the year is all about the scary movies, the creepy music, the carved pumpkins, the indoor and outdoor Halloween decor, costume dress up, going trick-or-treating in the dark to get candy from strangers, and going inside scary haunted houses. There is so much going on, that it seems there’s hardly any amount of time to put the brakes on everything and simply put on your thinking cap.

Ephesians 5:11 (Holman Christian Standard Bible: HCSB) reads like this: ‘Don’t participate in the fruitless works of darkness, but instead expose them.’

Ask yourself a few questions if you’ve never stopped to really think about Halloween. What is Halloween? Why does society tell us it’s okay to celebrate this spooky day? Should we keep shopping for the latest costumes, decor, and copious amounts of candy at the stores? Do you plan on celebrating the 31st of October every year along with your family? If your answer is ‘yes’, just hear me out for a moment. To better understand your motives in celebrating Halloween, I would like for you to answer these other questions. Who is this day glorifying and what benefit does it bring you if you participate in this tradition?

As we continue to dive more into the Bible, we see in Titus 1:15 (New International Reader’s Version: NIRV) that it says, ‘To people who are pure, all things are pure. But to those who have twisted minds and don’t believe, nothing is pure. In fact, their minds and their sense of what is right and wrong are twisted.

Are you pure in mind or do you have your thoughts in a twist? Does this Halloween Day glorify God in Heaven in any way, shape, or form? We can conclude from the Scripture verses we’ve looked over, that the answer in short is a sure ‘NO’. These verses tell us that Halloween is the fruitless works of darkness, since it is celebrated in the dark. We know that God is contrary to this, as we are children of light and not of the dark, so why then do so many families plan on celebrating Halloween year after year after year like clockwork, without really digging in and learning what it’s about?

Do you know why? It’s simply the Devil blindfolding people to the truth. It’s not in the interest of Satan to let you know that Halloween is a day to worship him. So, of course, He will masquerade in fake fun light, making it seem innocent and making the holiday feel as any other normal holiday. But now you have the truth revealed. Let your eyes be free to see what Lucifer is up to, so that you can put up your guard. He wants you to invite him in, and Halloween is just the lure tactic he uses. He acts like it’s all fun and enjoyment, so that we can dress up, along with our children, in costumes and go out in the dark of night to trick or treat. He is a master deceiver and his plan is grander than that of Halloween.

Galatians 5:13 (New American Standard Bible: NASB) says this, ‘For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters; only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but serve one another through love.

The Bible holds the key to the truth. And while it is true that the Bible does not specifically mention Halloween Day, it does, however, speak volumes on the forces of good and evil.

In John 3:19-20 (The Passion Translation: TPT) we have this, ‘And here is the basis for their judgment: The Light of God has now come into the world, but the people loved darkness more than the Light, because they want the darkness to conceal their evil. So the wicked hate the Light and try to hide from it, for the Light fully exposes their lives.

If you are anything like me, I don’t like to take people’s word for it. I like to do my due diligence and research what it is all about. Let’s start with the word Halloween. The definition if you look it up will tell you that it is the night of October 31, the eve of All Saints’ Day, commonly celebrated by children who dress in costume and go door-to-door asking for candy, which is true in America and many other parts of the world.

We find in 3 John 11 (New English Translation: NET) that it says, ‘Dear friend, do not imitate what is bad but what is good. The one who does good is of God; the one who does what is bad has not seen God.

We learn here that we must not imitate the bad only the good. So why then imitate the world that is bad. We must imitate Jesus who is good. The world loves Halloween, so as Christians, we should be doing the opposite and not follow in the ways of the world. There was no Halloween in the Bible, so then Christians shouldn’t celebrate this satanic day. Follow Jesus, who is a perfect example of holiness and good.

Let’s break down the word Hallow-een. To ‘hallow’ is to bless or to honor as holy, and ‘een’ is an abbreviation for evening. So by definition, Halloween is made to be as a holy evening. This is horribly wrong. Why should we honor this day as holy when it is all about evil? It is not at all holy when it is filled with such darkness. It does not honor God in Heaven who is full of light. This is a trick from the enemy. He wants to trick you into believing that Halloween is safe to practice and that there is nothing wrong with it, but the word itself means “hallowed evening”, a holy night, known to early European celebrators as ‘All Hallows Eve’.

In 1 John 5:19-20 (Tree of Life Version: TLV) it states, ‘We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one…we are in Him who is true, in His Son Yeshua the Messiah. This One is the true God and eternal life.

Only God is the One true God, not the Devil. Lucifer only roams this Earth because He has permission from God. God allows this because He gives us freedom to choose which way we want to go. You can either choose the road to life or the highway to destruction. And on Halloween, you can really see who the masses are choosing–Satan.

1 Corinthians 10:21 (International Standard Version: ISV) says, ‘You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot dine with the Lord and dine with demons.’

‘All Hallows Eve’ means that October 31 and November the 1st (All Saint’s Day) both pay homage to the saints because the word broken down means Hallow or saints. Then, eventually it all got sorted out and the name became known as Halloween. The origins of this holiday date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, celebrated on the eve of their new year, which is Oct. 31. According to the History Channel, Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago, believed the dead returned to the earth during that night, so they lit bonfires and wore costumes to keep ghosts at bay.

From Psalm 27:1 (Easy-to-Read Version: ERV) we can read, ‘Lord, you are my Light and my Savior, so why should I be afraid of anyone? The Lord is where my life is safe, so I will be afraid of no one!

Now that we know some history about where Halloween comes from and what it stands for we have free will to choose to continue in par-taking of this event or we can set ourselves apart from the pagan traditions of this world that is evil and does not give glory to God. There is only One who is to be called Holy and that is our Lord God. We must learn to pick up our Bibles and read them. God’s truth is found in the Scriptures of knowledge, packed with vital information for us to learn.

The Book of Ephesians 4:25-27 (Evangelical Heritage Version: EHV) says this: ‘Therefore, after you put away lying, let each of you speak truthfully with your neighbor, because we are all members of one body. “Be angry, yet do not sin.” Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry. Do not give the Devil an opportunity.’

One of most profound insights is the fact that most of us, if not all of us, were taught when we were little by our parents or guardians to not get close to strangers because we didn’t know what their intentions were. We had no clue as to who they were and if they were really being nice or not, so we just listened to our parents and stayed away from any strangers. Do you recall this in your personal life? Maybe they wanted to give you a candy out of their own goodwill, but your mom didn’t allow it because she felt she was protecting you from other people’s germs, or from cavities you’d get having that candy, and from strangers she didn’t know either. In the same way, God wants to protect us. He tells us many warnings and truth, in His word, so that we may know it.

Now if we look in Ephesians 6:12 (1599 Geneva Bible: GNV) it states, ‘For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, and against the worldly governors, the princes of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness, which are in the high places.

Then we go to Deuteronomy 18:13-14 (International Standard Version: ISV) and it says here, ‘You must be completely faithful to the Lord your God, because those nations that you are about to dispossess listen to those who practice witchcraft and divination. But the Lord does not allow you to act this way.

Sometimes, we have to think back to these memories and not just be so trusting with everyone. We do not know what goes on in their thoughts. The reality is that there are many people with really good intentions, but there are those people who want to cause harm. The day October 31 may be the most dangerous day of the year, with an average Halloween night resulting in more pedestrian deaths than any other night of the entire year. It is without a doubt that young children are more susceptible to the dangers because there are so many drivers, who are drunk, who are driving recklessly, and carefree, without regard to the safety of your children. So, we should really gain wisdom and knowledge from the Word of God so that we can make better decisions with our time, instead of teaching our children to go out into the streets at night where danger awaits.

In Proverbs 22:6 (King James Version: KJV) it reads like this, ‘Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

Then we get to 2 Corinthians 3:17 (King James Version: KJV) and we can read that it says, ‘Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.

Even the most innocent celebration, dancing around in a princess outfit collecting candy from strangers is still wrong. The whole concept is celebrating the Evil One, and it does not come from God. For God is light, and He makes everything good.

Isaiah 5:20 (Names of God Bible: NOG)  ‘How horrible it will be for those who call evil good and good evil, who turn darkness into light and light into darkness, who turn what is bitter into something sweet and what is sweet into something bitter.

There have been many kidnapping stories around Halloween time, that take place at the stores. Men and even some women have tried to kidnap young children away from their parents. These children put up a fight, and some are let go by the perpetrator, while others are snatched and taken out of the store. The Devil is everywhere, so be watchful about your surroundings. Evil is closer than you think. Some of these kidnappers are convicted criminals, and they use candy to lure in the child, leaving the parents in a frantic panic. They go running through every isle in search of their loved one but the child is gone. The parents end up getting helped by associate workers, and police get called to the scene. Amber alerts are put out, where then the perpetrator gets caught being responsible for the kidnapping or attempted kidnapping of a child. Then, finally the child gets reunited with their parents. How terrifying that this happens frequently throughout the year, but especially around this month of October. In some cases, it’s a kidnapping of an adult. That goes to show us that evil never sleeps and it looks to seek out anyone, the young or old. Always stay vigilant because evil is out there lurking. Stay in connection to God and pray.

1 Thessalonians 5:21-22 (New Living Translation: NLT)  ‘Hold on to what is good. Stay away from every kind of evil.

Romans 13:12 (English Standard Version: ESV) ‘The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light.

Of course, throughout the years, even decades, we have grown accustomed to the month and days leading up to Halloween. It is not our fault entirely for going along with it. But, once you know the truth, you will not want to partake in such traditions if you know that God is not okay with it. We are all conditioned to think it’s fine to keep this holiday on our calendars just like any other, but we know the truth is this: it glorifies the scary nature of darkness.

In Luke 10:19-20 (Tree of Life Version: TLV) ‘Behold, I have given you authority to trample upon serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names have been written in the heavens.

With the eerie music sounds of these series: Michael Myers in ‘Halloween’, Freddie Krueger from ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’, Jason from ‘Friday the 13th‘, Chucky from ‘Child’s Play’, and the list just continues; there are new terror movies coming out every year. These screenwriters and actors give in to the darkness of Lucifer, consuming their day in evil deeds. I pray for their souls to change and receive breakthroughs from God. There are so many people working for the kingdom of Hell and few are working for The Kingdom of God.

2 Corinthians 11:14-15 (Worldwide English-New Testament: WE) says, ‘I am not surprised. Satan tries to make himself look like an angel of light. So it is not strange if his workers also try to make themselves look like God’s workers who do right. They will come to an end like the work they do!

All we see in the tenth month of the year are goblins, voodoo, vampires, witches, wolves, ghosts, black cats, carved pumpkins, Halloween clowns, creatures of death, and all other evil that rise and come out to play. Nothing good comes out of this day; and nothing good will ever come out of watching scary movies with your friends and family. Think of the nightmares it brings on at night when you lay down to sleep. Some of them can feel so unimaginably real.

From Isaiah 8:19-20 (New Century Version: NCV) we read, ‘Some people say, “Ask the mediums and fortune-tellers, who whisper and mutter, what to do.” But I tell you that people should ask their God for help. Why should people who are still alive ask something from the dead? You should follow the teachings and the agreement with the Lord. The mediums and fortune-tellers do not speak the word of the Lord, so their words are worth nothing.

Lay no hand on any demonic strongholds, for these evil spirits will enter your soul if you will allow them to and they will bring many friends with them to torment you or the ones you love. I warn you about the dangers of doing witchcraft, casting spells, using ouija boards to summon spirits, getting tarot readings, doing seances, dressing up for Halloween, playing apple bobbing, divination, watching scary movies, going to fortune tellers, searching for ghosts in haunted houses, and seeking out other kinds of evil.

There is so much darkness in this world, I could go on and on. There’s too many people that are going along with Halloween. Their faith is compromised. They want to fit into the world and celebrate this holiday with family and friends, but also call themselves children of God. You cannot be at the Lord’s table and at the demons table all at once. This simply is wrong in the eyes of God, no matter how we feel about it. God has not given us permission to act in this manner, so do not permit evil into your lives. Do not permit the celebration of Halloween into your family’s lives, but protect them from Satan, by serving God and staying true to your beliefs. Listen to the guidance of the Holy Spirit and not to your heart that desires to celebrate Halloween. No matter who is celebrating this year, say ‘no’ if they invite you. That is a two letter, strong word that will change your life completely. Moreover, it will improve your relationship to God. Here we have yet another verse that shares this truth.

1 John 1:5 (World English Bible: WEB) says, ‘This is the message which we have heard from him and announce to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

We see contrast here, the darkness vs. light, just like evil vs. good. God is light. No darkness is in Him at all. Who is darkness then? Satan is. Halloween is dark. So this year, stay near to God and to His word because we are nothing without Him. Remember that we are not of this world. God has called us out of the darkness and into the light. He bought us with the sacred blood of Jesus Christ. Do not be fooled by the Devil and his gimmicks; do not give him an opportunity. Halloween is satanic and no matter what anyone tells you, it will never change the fact that it is the worship day of Lucifer.

Do not be double-minded. You are either walking with Christ or walking with the Enemy. You cannot have one foot in the world with demons and another in Heaven with the Lord. You must be planted firm with both feet in faith if you claim to be a Christian, otherwise, you are just fooling your own self. Only Christians that love Jesus Christ and fear God will not partake in any Halloween activities. You cannot moderate this day and make it into a fun event either at church or at home. This is extremely ungratifying to the Lord. Halloween is blasphemy. Only God is holy. The Devil is a liar.

Do not be lukewarm, you are either hot or cold. Either you are on fire for God or not. There is no middle ground. God will spit you out and say that He never knew you, or He will say that you have been a good and faithful servant. Which of these statements do you want to hear God tell you come Judgment Day? Think about it.

In closing, anything of this world we should not love; we should only love our Father God for He alone is Holy; not Satan and definitely not his worship day on Halloween. To celebrate it, is blasphemy against the Good Lord. Instead, stand out of the crowd, be a light unto this world, and help me expose the evil works of the Devil! Share this with someone you care about, so that they may take off Satan’s blindfold and finally open their eyes to the truth of Halloween. May the love of Christ be with you all!

Giving glory to God forever and ever,

Leticia J. Santa Cruz
